Awake in the middle of the night and hear one of the telltale sounds of the neighborhood: an HVAC fan that turns on, then immediately turns off. I've had it happen to me before, so I know: thermostat or blower motor is broken, causing it to turn off. Fix is probably less than $1000 if the HVAC is turned off immediately, but it's the middle of the night.
(This happened to me last year. Caught it within an hour. Parts were under warranty, so I had to wait three days for the repair to be made, but it cost me $0. Well, like $200 for the in-window air conditioner I had to buy in the meantime.)
Reader, the sound continued for two more days, day and night. The compressor has certainly gone by that time, and probably everything else, too: repairs starting at $10k. I would feel worse about this for my neighbor, but this is the one who flipped the house to an Air BnB, so I suppose this is what you get for not monitoring the situation.
