I had the oddest sensation when I finished The Military Philosophers, of having come to the end of something quite significant, and knowing that though there was more, it was not going to be like what had come before, and it raised the desire to avoid starting in on a new book, to give me some time to think about and remain under the effect of that one. The sensation is odd because it's the very one that Nick has at the end of The Military Philosophers, after attending the end-of-war Victory Service at St. Paul's in London: the feeling that something momentous had happened that he couldn't quite appreciate.
