The quote-unquote "winner's history of rock 'n' roll" is a dumb idea, and easy to refute. Here goes:
If the idea is that greater album sales prove that, say, Kiss was more important and influential than the Velvet Underground, then it stands to reason that Led Zeppelin II and Jewel's Pieces of You were equally important.*
