The best possible condemnation of contemporary indie music, straight from the horse's mouth:

"The funny thing is that back when [Chicago's "Baby, What a Big Surprise"] came out, it was basically the most square music going, but if this was brand new today, it’d be considered indie rock."

Of course, the blogger in question considers that to be a point in Chicago's favor. Personally, I can only think of it as a desecration of everything that makes indie music actually interesting: pop instinct and edge. To wit:
