I had the good fortune, many years ago now, to have had a mechanic tell me that the 'check engine' light is basically useless. Though the light had come on, it was for no serious problem, and so he declined to charge me and sent me on my way with that information. It covers too many possible scenarios, and any truly serious problem will be otherwise evident. What it does do, as the post points out, is scare people who don't know anything about their cars into taking them to a mechanic. So ignore those check engine lights, people!*
*And don't consider that advice that could lead to any liability on my part.
