A link, rather than a video, for once: "Gloria's Step [Take 1]" by the Bill Evans Trio, from The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings. Take 2 is the one that made the album Sunday Afternoon at the Village Vanguard,* but I think Take 1 is superior in almost every way, except for the 10-second gap where someone knocked the power cord out from the recording equipment. I have nothing but love for this album, and find it to generally be the perfect accompaniment to writing--odd, because I normally can't stand to have any sound at all when I'm trying to write. Recently I've been enjoying it through my home speaker system, rather than through my ipod or terrible computer speakers, and the difference is astounding: not just greater clarity, but walking right up to the line of verisimilitude: the bass sounds as though it's in a particular corner of the room, an effect that's astounding until you realize the seeming physical location of the musicians is impossible unless you just happen to be sitting in the middle of the three of them.
But it's great. Enjoy!
*Aside from the notable quality of the recordings, they're of historical importance: it's the last time the trio played together, since the bassist was killed about a week later.
