I'm not sure whether Rob Sheffield impressed me more by dropping a Smiths reference in his appreciation of Britney Spears, or by his pointing out that Britney's latest song has a flute hook taken from the melody of a Kinks song. Again: a flute hook taken from a Kinks song. I might've been wrong in assuming Lady Gaga was the brilliant postmodern pastiche artist. Either that, or Britney is trolling the rest of the world pretty hard. Either way, I'm impressed.
