The number of people who don't understand that an academic talk needs something humorous or otherwise memorable every five minutes is staggering.* You can attempt humor less often than that, of course, but your audience will no longer be paying attention.
*If you are staggeringly insightful or a master rhetor, this does not apply. You are probably neither. I certainly am neither.
