I did not like David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas when I read it, thinking it was not much more than a rehash of stories told better by other writers along with some ill-defined New Age-y/eastern spirituality which is left criminally under-explained.* A Los Angeles Review of Books writer attempts to cite these weaknesses as strengths, using the argument that Mitchell is attempting to create a 21st-century novel. I remain unconvinced.

*I still cannot believe I actually read the 70-ish pages of poor pidgin English that was "Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ever'thing After."
