Given the incredible outrage that spewed forth from facebook, etc, over Netflix's decision to raise its prices, a few notes:

1. There is no comparable substitute for Netflix, assuming your tastes run beyond recent, popular movies and TV shows. Even at $16 a month. In the fall I will be giving up cable and replacing it with Amazon instant video of the six shows I watch which, even at $2 per episode, will still be cheaper than a $50 or $100 cable bill. I also considered giving up on cable and just buying myself a DVD or two a month. Netflix will still be cheaper than all these options.

2. I had no idea so many people's budgets could manage $120 a year for old Netflix but would be irretrievably broken by $180ish a year.

3. Way back in 2003, when I signed up for Netflix the first time, it was $20 a month for unlimited dvds, an excellent deal even with a limited selection (as in, a better deal than anything else going at the time). $16 for most any movie I can think of, plus Cheers, Friday Night Lights, Twin Peaks, and Mad Men (in a few weeks, I believe) streaming is still a great deal.
