As hard as it may believe for non-Michiganians to believe, people in Detroit think of the auto industry less as a profit-seeking corporation and more as as a public entity responsible for the well-being of the community.
It's very hard to explain to people not from Michigan why the idea of buying a foreign car (even one actually made in America) makes me break out in metaphorical hives.

Quite right. The car companies might be a weird "public entity responsible for the well-being of the community," but we also have to look out for their well-being too. I love my (assembled in Mexico) Ford.
