8.2.11

I've received at least two mass-mailings from them in the past week, charmingly mailed to either "Professor Nicholas Troester" or "Dr. Nicholas Troester" (flattery will get you everywhere with me), as well as innumerable emails, so:

If you're a recent graduate or grad student, you should apply for and attend one of IHS' summer seminars. I attended the one now called "Liberty and Society for Graduate Students" two years in a row; the second time there I was able to present a small part of my dissertation research. IHS is unfortunately often tarred with the 'crazy libertarian' brush. In my experience, though, the range of people who attend IHS seminars is rather broad, and ideological conformity is in no way enforced. The level of instruction is usually high, though very economics-oriented, which can be problematic for those of us who are not economists. The other participants are first-rate, including a number of people whose work I now follow closely, and occasionally give comments or advice to regarding their research. In other words, not a bad way to spend a week in the middle of the summer.
