WHAT A WORLD: One of my very best friends in high school (with whom I am now only in occasional contact), who is now a political theory graduate student who reads (among other things) Hugo Grotius, just wrote me an email recommending 2666 to me as exactly the sort of book he thinks I would like.
I regard none of this as surprising.
