TRANSLATION: Having received now multiple invitations to election night parties (all from good friends whose invitations I will feel bad declining), the following phrase always comes up. I thought it'd be helpful to provide a translation:

"the most important election of our lifetimes" = "I think my side will finally win"

My memory is long enough to recall that people said this in 1992, 2000 and 2004 as well.

Your translation may get at what a lot of people mean by this, but I really intended something quite different. I would never dream of comparing this to 00 or 92, and not even 04. The point for me is that a black candidate is at the head of a major party ticket for the first time ever and this election could be monumentally historic if he wins. That he happens to be representing "my side" is beside the point, I think.

And I should note it's not yours that I had in mind, but there were some that were clearly more... anti- than pro-, shall I say?
