Consequence: the price of a player is determined by market forces, in this case, what owners are willing to pay. Which means if people can convince, for example, AOL Time Warner (the Braves) or NewsCorp (Dodgers) to pay less for players, they'll get less money. This is how the system is supposed to work.
And anyway, better baseball than football, where on any given Sunday, any team can beat any other team because they're all mediocre.
